Update on Sanctuary Roof Replacement Project

October 26, 2022

The Sanctuary roof replacement project is underway, and the new shingles on the church roof are looking great! Crews are currently on site during daylight hours from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The project is expected to last another few days, depending on weather and repairs required.

The existing shingle roof dates from the late 1980s. Shingle wear, nails popping out, and a few soft spots have become noticeable in the last few years. The previous roofing was torn off, and a 2” rigid insulation board with ½” plywood was installed over the Sanctuary’s original 3” x 6” tongue and groove roof structure (the ceiling we see from the inside).

Areas with the original grey galvanized metal fascia will be replaced to match the red metal fascia, plus rain diverters and gutter screens will be included in the project. The last two items will hopefully correct a problem with rainwater leaking into our foundation during heavy rains.

Funding for the project will come from Capital Reserves.

Equipment will be parked along the south/main entrance drive, although they might need to access the roof from the north/Memorial Garden side. Crews will access the roof hatch through the second floor Art Studio room. The main entrance drive off Harrison will remain open to traffic.

At University United Methodist Church, we affirm that as disciples of Jesus Christ, we are an open and inclusive congregation and welcome all persons into full participation regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic situation, age, ability, education, background and whether single or partnered.
