From the Pastor

Christmas Offerings and UMCOR
Rev. William Bills
December 14, 2021

You recently received two special appeals from us here at University United Methodist Church. One was for the annual special offering for our church staff. The other was for the Christmas special offering. This offering was designated by our missions committee for a local and an international need. St. Vincent’s Catholic Charities will receive half of the Christmas offering for Afghan refugee resettlement in the Lansing area. The other half will go to Haitian Artisans for Peace International. The situation in Haiti has been dire for some time and there is little good news to share from Haiti.

We have already received many of your offerings for these mission needs and for our church staff. Ours is a very generous congregation. Your gifts are appreciated. In the meantime, devastating storms and tornadoes have swept across several states to our south and east. These storms have caused great damage and loss of life. You have been asked to give a lot lately. But in the event that you would like to respond to these recent disasters, I encourage you to do so through the United Methodist Committee on Relief. UMCOR is rivaled only by the Red Cross in disaster relief work. One hundred percent of anything given through UMCOR will go directly to those in need. You may give directly to UMCOR using the link below. If you choose to give through the church, please designate your gift for “Tornado Relief.” (Advance #901670)

It seems like the whole world cannot catch a break right now. So UMCOR continues to support Conference Disaster Response Coordinators after the tornadoes in various parts of the country.  Solidarity grants to provide immediate funding are being released and UMCOR will be working with impacted areas to journey from the chaos of response on through long term recovery.

Please continue to hold victims, survivors, and relief workers in your prayers. You may make a gift to UMCOR’s U.S. Disaster Response and Recovery Fund at https://umcmission.org/advance-project/901670/

Thank you for remembering all who are facing a sad and challenging Christmas season.https://www.umc.org/en/content/united-methodists-responding-to-disaster
