“Mark Your Calendar!”
What happened to summer? Today I was looking at sermon themes for October and devotional materials for Advent! Time keeps on slippin’, slippin’, slippin’, into the future! (Steve Miller Band).
On Sunday, September 2, worship will begin at 11:00 a.m. While this is a little later than what we have been accustomed to the long range plan is to launch a band-led worship service in 2019 that will begin at 9:00 a.m. Sunday school for children, youth, and adults could then meet between the two services. The target audience for the new worship service will be families with children living at home. College students will certainly be welcome even though that may not be their best time for worship. Many things had to be considered in making this decision. Factors include things like where the choir can rehearse if there is an earlier service in the sanctuary, when the children’s choir can rehearse, how to schedule Sunday school and nursery, parking lot issues, and more. We hope to launch the band-led service with three preview services over three months right after the first of the year.
As part of our bridge building work with the community, we are collaborating with the businesses next door on “A Tour of Trowbridge”. This event will be held on September 7th from 2:00 – 7:00 p.m. New students will be invited to explore the businesses, sample some treats and try yoga, a short work-out, and more. At each venue, students will get their passports stamped and be entered to win prizes. We will be offering hospitality and parking for this event.
On Sunday, September 9, we will host our annual picnic after worship. Please remember to RSVP, especially if you have invited guests, so that we can prepare enough good. The band, “Jimmy Likes Pie” will provide live music again this year.
The entire month of September is “Peace Quest Month” in the Lansing/East Lansing area. Peace Quest was created by the East Lansing Peace Education Center which is based out of our church. Governor Snyder has officially declared September 21 as Peace Day in Michigan. A rally will be held that day from 11:00 – 2:00 p.m. at the state capital. Our church will host Imam Sohail Chaudry on September 16th in worship. Imam Chaudry will preach that day on “The Right to Peace.”
